The big show at Lakeland, Florida is open and happening. Today (Tuesday April 4th) is opening day; the event runs through Sunday, April 9th. Along with Videoman Dave, we’ve already starting making the rounds and we’ve found plenty to see.
As you see in the photos, Evolution Trikes made a dramatic announcement of a new weight shift trike model called Revolt. In communications, they’ve spelled it RevoLT, which you could interpret to mean Revo (their super deluxe model) Light. Yet it’s probably more correct to call it a different Revo without the fancy pants but with some cool new features.
Among them, Revolt has giant tundra tires not often seen on trikes. Paired with that long shock absorber legs worthy of a SuperSTOL or Outback Shock. Like their lower priced single seater, Rev, Revolt does away with the forward strut, sometimes called a compression strut, which leaves both occupants but particularly the front occupant or solo pilot with an enormous unobstructed view.

Finally, HERE IT IS! …the All-New Look-and-Feel
You could call it thirteen years in the making. More pragmatically, ByDanJohnson.com has now caught up with the mobile revolution. Welcome to ByDanJohnson.com 2.0 (or, for short, “BDJ2”). We hope you’ll like the changes — and will not be temporarily frustrated with the differences from the old “BDJ1” site — because even more changes are on the way.
You may not believe it looks too different… and if so, that’s good. We tried to keep most of the look and feel even while making the website much more mobile-friendly, or “responsive” in the parlance of tech folks. With two thirds of our website visitors coming via their smartphone, the site is mainly different in how well it accommodates whatever modern device is used to view the articles, videos, and more.
Here are a few website user notes…

Evolution Trikes
Evolution Trikes developed and continues to refine their Revo, an absolutely magnificent weight shift control aircraft (or trike). Rev is their new very affordable single place machine.
DeLand Showcase 2016 a Success in Inaugural Event
The first-ever DeLand Sport Aviation Showcase finished on a high note with a sold-out flock of vendors giving kudos to event director Jana Filip and her team. I spoke to most exhibitors and heard zero complaints. By itself that’s rather unusual. Perhaps they were cutting the new show some slack but more likely their enthusiasm was because the show had indeed been well executed.
At every airshow I’ve attended vendors seem hard to satisfy about foot traffic. By afternoon each of the three days, visitors seemed to thin, nonetheless most airplane vendors reported good qualified visitors. Several companies reported “solid leads” developed at the event and apparently a few sales occurred
Attendees also seemed to enjoy themselves in the abundant sunshine and 80-degree temperatures of early November. The event ran 3-4-5 this year and has already set dates for next year with an expectation of similar weather.
Happy 12th Birthday, Light-Sport Aircraft!
Earlier this month, Light-Sport Aircraft celebrated a birthday. The date was September 1st, when FAA made the then-new Sport Pilot/Light-Sport Aircraft rule “effective” (to employ FAA-speak). So… happy birthday, LSA.
In those dozen years — the newest aircraft segment is not even a teenager yet — quite a bit has changed. If you are a parent, you may not notice your child getting older as you see them daily. However, the distant uncle or grandparent who only gets to visit infrequently may be astounded how much the little guy or gal has grown. I suspect those close to LSA may have a similar perspective deficit, so let me make some contrasts.
The nearby images are from a talk I gave at the recently concluded Mid-West LSA Expo. I went into more detail than this article permits but I’ll bet you get the points.
AIRFRAMES — Today, we accept that we have some marvelous, sleek, high-tech, well-equipped, well-performing models.

Coming up TOMORROW! — September 8-9-10, 2016 — is the Midwest LSA Expo. I’m on-site for all three days in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. More info: Midwest LSA Expo.
Only six years after Steve Jobs proudly announced the first iPad, the tablet device seems to have fully conquered aviation. Airline captains routinely use iPads in lieu of bulky printed instrument charts. GA airplane owners with analog panels commonly use an iPad to join the digital revolution without needing to get FAA’s permission. And, LSA developers often accommodate the iDevice; indeed, some Light-Sports make do solely with iPads, occasionally multiple devices. Despite his visionary prowess, I bet Steve Jobs never imagined such a result. Unfortunately, he didn’t live long enough to see the cockpit transformation his gizmo caused.
However, if you’ve flown with an iPad, you know you need some way to hold it that allows access to its wealth of information without interfering with airplane operation.
Evolution Trikes — Rev 1 of 2 (2015)
The people behind the very impressive two seat deluxe trike called Revo introduced their first single seater called Rev. In this video, the first of a two part effort, we see developer Larry Mednick and his father Phil assemble the airplane from trailerable form to ready to fly in a claimed six minutes; you can watch and time for your self to see how transformative this is. Then see Part 2 for more details.
Women in Aviation — Amy Saunders
Videoman Dave and I decided we need to do several videos in support of increasing the number of women involved with flying. Amy is a darn impressive pilot. Her background included fixed wings but she made the jump to trikes flying the spectacular Evolution Trikes Revo. Join us as we start to interview more women pilots. You’ll find Amy a fun interview and she’s got both the enthusiasm and knowledge to be the good pilot she is.
Ibis Aircraft — Magic GS 700
The energetic folks behind the ApolloFox and the extraordinary Evolution Revo (weight shift trike) are now representing the Columbian-designed Ibis Magic. An all-metal LSA, the Apollo team has elected to fully load it with a large new glass display from MGL, autopilot, emergency airframe parachute, and more. Here’s a new one you’ll want to examine soon.
My 4 Favorite Aircraft Seen at Aero 2016
I always love traveling to Aero Friedrichshafen because of the new aircraft I will see. We media types live for the new stuff (because it’s what we believe our readers or video watchers want to consume). I made my last dash through the hall on Saturday — Aero ran from April 20-23, 2016 — and I am now in Zurich, Switzerland awaiting my flight back to the USA.
I saw many aircraft worthy of closer examination. I will prepare articles on those and more detail about the ones below, too. Later on, some of my Aero videos will hit YouTube after some editing. While the memories are fresh, though, I want to give an early peek at four aircraft that grabbed my attention …and that of many others, judging from the challenge to get near them during opening hours. I present these in no particular order.
Zlin Savage Shock — Shock definitely created awe at Aero.
