There are a lot of sexy looking airplanes displayed at AirVenture, but a sure front runner for sleekest looking plane around is the Prime Veloce all-composite, two-place tandem retractable sport plane from Monopoli, Italy. This little speedster is powered by a Rotax 915 iS and is listed as capable of a 170 knot cruise speed. It stalls at 45 knots with full flaps and 57 knots clean. There are about 70 Prime Veloce aircraft flying in the rest of the world and Blackshape Aircraft, out of Sheridan, Indiana, will be importing them to the U.S. They are hoping to market the Prime Veloce as a completed aircraft, counting on MOSAIC regulations to empower them to accomplish that task. This “mosaic-ready” aircraft will carry 26 gallons of fuel and should be capable of 1,650 feet per minute climb at maximum takeoff weight. Blackshape will list the aircraft, depending on configuration at about $330,000.

Arion's Lightning XS, powered by Continental's 180-horsepower Titan engine, is a huge performer with fixed landing gear. This is a kit, although Arion also makes a ready-to-fly Special LSA version called LS-1.
Builder Assist Centers
Nearly everyone in recreational aviation is by now well aware that the country is dotted with enterprises calling themselves a Builder Assist Center. This was not always the case.Sweden's Blackwing is a retractable two seater with in-flight adjustable propeller. These qualities require a kit-built aircraft in America today. Blackwing is also available with fixed gear that could (but does not yet) qualify as an SLSA.
Rans offers their S-21 Outbound in either tricycle gear as shown or in taildragger with a choice of powerplants. You can buy this aircraft assembled or in kit form.
Blackshape's Prime is another aggressive tandem seating European hot rod with retractable gear. In the USA today it would have to be assembled from a kit.
Then What?

Blackshape’s Prime Invades Canada & North America
At Aero 2013 in Friedrichshafen, Germany, I was caught by the smooth, lean lines of an airplane called Prime by designer/producer Blackshape. The LSA-sized two seater has an aggressive yet sweeping physique and small frontal area that benefits from tandem seating. While powered by Rotax and light enough to otherwise qualify as a Light-Sport, Prime has retractable gear and an in-flight adjustable prop so it cannot currently meet U.S. regulations. However, it has been approved by Transport Canada in their Advanced Ultralight Aircraft class that is very similar to LSA. Though speculation has continued for years, Canada has yet to embrace the U.S. LSA regulatory scheme. By the way, Aero 2014 is scheduled for April 9-12 — immediately following Sun ‘n Fun 2014 (April 1-6) — and ByDanJohnson.com reporters will be on the scene to catch the newest offerings from Europe Blackshape’s Prime will be distributed in North America by the Aircit Aviation-Aviasport partnership.
