Modestly-Priced, Easy-Flying Challenger Series
For 21 Years, Quad City’s Challenger has proved a good choice.
It’s enough to create a serious case of envy among producers vying for the market the Challenger seems to own year after year. Even in 2003, a slow year for all aircraft manufacturers, Quad City Ultralight Aircraft pumped out another 120 kits. Most light-sport aviation companies would consider that an excellent performance. For Quad City, it was a down year!
The venerable company from the Quad Cities area of Iowa, near the Illinois border, has put more than 3000 aircraft in the air. Van’s Aircraft has done even better, and Quicksilver has more than 10,000 ultralights flying, but the Challenger is clearly one of the industry’s leaders. And the company has enjoyed the same leadership since it was founded more than two decades ago.
Despite this success, Quad City maneuvers rather quietly. Last year the company celebrated 20 years of operation, yet many ultralighters and most aviators were unaware of the accomplishment.
Savage Cub-like Taildragger
As we near the fourth anniversary of the introduction
of the first special light-sport aircraft
(S-LSA) in April 2004, notable successes have
been achieved. With approximately 1,000 fixed-wing
LSA-plus several hundred flex wings-in the national
fleet, and with the entry of Cessna and Cirrus into the
LSA marketplace, LSA have clearly become part of the
aviation scene.
Whatever the soothsayers predict for the future
of LSA, one fact has been established: Pretty yellow
taildraggers generate a solid following. Combining
the sales of American Legend Aircraft’s Legend Cub,
CubCrafters’ Sport Cub, and European supplier Zlin’s
Savage, nearly one in five S-LSA registered in the FAA’s
database are yellow taildraggers.
American Legend currently leads in market share, but
CubCrafters steadily rose through the ranks during 2007.
Well down the list, but with mounting registrations, is the
Zlin Savage. Though it more closely resembles the RANS S-7
Courier than the traditional J-3 Cub, the Zlin taildragger has
much to offer.
Flying the Puma
One of Canada’s best-kept secrets can be found hidden
away in a northeastern Ontario town called Hawkesbury. That
secret is the PUMA – a little plane being imported into Canada by
Humberto Dramisino of Otreb Technologies.
When you look into the history of ultralight and light sport aviation,
it’s interesting to note that the successful manufacturers are the ones
that introduce a design and then adjust it as times goes by to better fit
the ever-changing aviation marketplace.
This is what has lead to the success of the PUMA. Designed in Italy
by Antonio Bortolanza, the aircraft has undergone a number of design
transitions since it was first introduced in ’85. Dramisino has been
involved with the manufacture of the PUMA from a very early age. He
first started working in the factory when he was only 15 years of age,
“working just for the pleasure of working on airplanes,” he says.
CGS Aviation’s Hawk Arrow II Wins SLSA Approval
The latest aircraft to earn Special Light-Sport Aircraft airworthiness (SLSA #77) is one of America’s most familiar and best proven models. CGS Aviation first offered its Hawk model 26 years ago, in 1982.
Since then, many model variations have been brought to market…single seat versions, two seaters, tri-gear, taildragger. Regular evolutionary changes resulted from the continuous process of development and refinement.
These efforts have sold more than 1,750 Hawks to pilots who fly them across the USA and all over the globe. *** Many years after company owner and designer Chuck Slusarczyk first offered his “real airplane” ultralight, it is appropriate that he and his Hawk Arrow II join the SLSA parade. Customers have a major reason to rejoice. Read carefully: the first 10 Hawk SLSA will be sold for $39,995 ready-to-fly with the Rotax 582.
This is, by a wide margin, the lowest price yet for any certified LSA.
Rotary Power for M-Squared’s Part 103 Ultralight
In the late 1970s, Mazda popularized the rotary engine for their RX-7 sports car. Such engines are particularly known for their smooth running operation. Many aviators can appreciate low-vibration powerplants but especially those flying the lightest of recreational aircraft, namely Part 103 machines. *** Now, M-Squared has partnered to offer such a combination. Revolution Rotary Engines Inc., a Canadian-based manufacturing company located in Markham, Ontario connected with M-Squared‘s Paul Mather to exploit the possibilities of rotary power. At Sun ‘n Fun 2008, M-Squared showed a single place, strutted Breese with the R301A single cylinder rotary engine supplying 35 horsepower. Installed on M-Squared’s lightweight Breese SS (single seat), the aircraft is said to remain within 103’s tight parameters (assuming the buyer does not insist on options and accessories that would bump it over weight). *** The single rotor aircraft engine looks compact and weighs a reported 40 pounds.
X-Air’s Return Brings Lowest-Cost SLSA
Upon seeing modern LSA, many aviators say, “Oh, these aren’t ‘those ultralights’ at all.” Truth be told, even those ultralights aren’t ultralights any more. Today, a certified but ultralight-like aircraft will be either Special or Experimental LSA. *** Witness what I’ll call the “return” of the X-Air. I’ve reported on this design as it has evolved (see photo legend). Astute visitors may recognize X-Air LS as an evolution of the pioneering Weedhopper, though little of the original design remains. The latest iteration of this venerable design is working to gain SLSA airworthiness. X-Air founder and designer, Joel Koechlin, has three decades of experience in light aircraft. His X-Air series has been a mainstay among European microlights for 15 years, selling more than 1,200 copies. *** The coming SLSA model employs the 85-hp Jabiru 2200 powerplant. Koechlin said, “This aircraft is exactly what the LSA category was meant for; it is light and easy to fly and simply fun!” U.S.
StingSport, a Carbon Fiber LSA
A fully loaded, top-of-the-range aircraft
Eastern European aircraft are expected to factor massively in the coming wave of light-sport aircraft (LSA) available to Americans. Several designs have already begun to attract interest as we get closer to approval of the ASTM International consensus standards that will govern the design, construction, and maintenance of these machines. One airplane that generated significant interest at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh for the last three years is the TL-2000 Sting.
Common to designs we’re seeing from Eastern Europe, the TL-2000 Sting from TL Ultralight in the Czech Republic is a sleek, composite aircraft with impressive performance and handling. The Sting series evolved from an earlier TL Ultralight design called the TL-96, and both aircraft cater to the European ultralight market, which has allowed the manufacture of LSA-category aircraft under European microlight regulations. Now, the TL-2000 and TL-96 are being reworked to meet LSA requirements. The planes have been renamed the StingSport and StarSport respectively to designate the aircraft that will be LSA-compliant.
Czech SportCruiser, Custom-Designed for Americans
Czech Aircraft Works (CZAW) began life in the newly
freed Czech Republic not long after the history-making
fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Tapping a wellspring
of aeronautical training and experience that became
available when the Soviets pulled out of the former
Czechoslovakia, American owner Chip Erwin started
CZAW in 1992. Using the highly trained but lowcost
labor force available, Erwin manufactured parts
for and assembled the CH 601 and CH 701 designs of
Chris Heintz’s Zenair Ltd. The young company found
a solid market in Europe for fully built CH 601s and
CH 701s. Each year it grew in size and built ever more
of the all-metal designs.
As CZAW increased its production
capability, it began to explore designs
of its own. It found success first with
its Czech Floats; many American
aircraft are fitted with this all-metal
amphibious system. Three years ago,
CZAW partnered with Sport Aircraft
Works (SAW) of Palm City, Florida,
led by Danny and Zaneta Defelici,
to pursue the development, sales,
and marketing of light-sport aircraft
(LSA).
FK Lightplanes’ Feature-Laden Fk9 Mk IV
This airplane began life under
B&F Technik Vertriebs GmbH,
a name derived from partners
Dirk Breitkreuz and Peter Funk, who
started the commercial enterprise.
Now, Funk operates the company on
his own and has adopted the worldlier
and less cumbersome name Fk-
Leichtflugzeuge, its English translation
being Fk-Lightplanes. U.S.
distributor Tony Anderson named
his enterprise Fk-Lightplanes USA.
Based in Pembroke Pines, Florida,
Fk-Lightplanes USA calls North Perry
Airport home.
The Funk name is storied in European
light aircraft development,
with more than a dozen original designs
to its credit. Fk-Lightplanes today
produces three airplanes, each
quite different from the other: our
subject airplane this month-the
high-wing Fk9, the low-wing Fk14
Polaris, and a folding-wing biplane
called the Fk12 Comet. I’ve had the
pleasure of flying all three models,
but I think the Fk9 may prove most
popular with American LSA enthusiasts.
Though designed and refined in
Speyer, Germany, the Fk9 and its siblings
are now fabricated in Poland by
workers with decades of experience
building Soviet fighters and transports.
