Lockwood to Help Educate A&Ps on Rotax Powerplants
A&P acceptance (or lack thereof) is a leading reason for Cessna’s decision to use the Continental O-200D in Skycatcher. Surveys through their Cessna Pilot Centers showed that a majority of FAA-licensed mechanics preferred an engine they already know. Most lack knowledge of the Rotax 9-series that powers the majority of the LSA fleet. And when an expert knows little about a new product, human nature compels him to resist. *** Trying to educate A&Ps on the best-selling LSA engine is one task of Rotax service center operator, Phil Lockwood. This winter, he’ll be giving hourlong presentations for A&Ps (and owners), trying to encourage to A&Ps to take a pair of two-day courses to bring them up to speed with the Austrian engines. *** Of 62 presently approved SLSA models, only 8 (13%) use another engine (Continental or Jabiru). Starting in 1973 with the ultralight market, Rotax has produced more than 125,000 aircraft engines.

What did you have to be thankful for last week when the nation paused for a day? Paul Klomhaus and his group at Eagle Aviation were nearly done with their Special Light-Sport Aircraft approval. No doubt they were thankful all the hard effort was drawing to a close. Yet Thanksgiving Day dessert came when the Wisconsin company earned their Airworthiness Certificate on Monday November 26th. The EA-100 is now #62 among aircraft that passed their Designated Airworthiness Representative (DAR) inspection. Eagle Aviation is located well with EAA’s sphere of influence on Wittman Field, which now has its second producer of new aircraft Sport Pilots may fly (the other is homebuilt producer, Sonex). *** Klomhaus sources airframe components based on the work of Ibis Aircraft in Columbia. The south American company has built their very similar Magic series for 17 years. Oshkosh-based Eagle Aviation does final assembly, engine and avionics installation, and all the finish work.
Urban Air USA Brings Lambada Closer
Bostik Industries is known to some LSA buyers as “the other supplier” of emergency ballistic parachute systems (Magnum). Indeed, that activity appears to be thriving as major producer BRS Parachutes intensifies its focus on larger GA airplanes and light jet projects. *** An affable Joe Bostik (airline captain and champion hang glider pilot) is also the U.S. agent for the shapely Lambada motorglider. Though soaring pilots will be instantly drawn to this reasonably priced motorglider (less than $100,000; other choices can cost much more), the airplane also works as a cross country cruiser, able to fly 800 nautical miles at speeds of 100 mph. Though Rotax 9-series engines offer great reliability, should the powerplant go quiet, a Lambada pilot can glide up to six miles from only 1,000 feet off the ground. Bostik now has his Lamabada website well populated with info, specs, and photos.
Old Becomes New…and Lowers the Cost of LSA
Sport Hornet is the second fixed wing “ultralight” to make the jump to Special Light-Sport Aircraft certification.* Some consider Hornet a “true ultralight” as it uses an aluminum tubing airframe. Builder Higher Class Aviation made numerous changes: The upside-down two-stroke Rotax 582 gave way to right-side-up four-stroke Rotax 9-series engines. Gross weight was increased. New dual struts brace dual wing spars. The cockpit is four inches wider and rear rudder pedals have more room. Conventional toe brakes are available. *** All these things are great but the best news may be base price for a reasonably well-equipped Sport Hornet with the 80-hp 912: $49,995. [UPDATE: 8/29/07 — HCA now gives buyers the 100-hp 912S for the same price!] And one more important thing: since Sport Hornet still flies like most ultralights it can continue to train pilots to fly other ultralight-type aircraft. After the final deadline of January 31, 2010, you’ll still be able to conduct training for hire in a Sport Hornet.
The EuroFox Offers Affordable Quality
Repatriate means “to restore or return to the country of origin.” That’s exactly what’s happening with the Aeropro EuroFox, an Eastern European-built light-sport aircraft (LSA) based on American design work. It’s coming to this country as a ready-to-fly LSA through importer Rollison Light Sport Aircraft (RLSA).
Just as a car made in Detroit may incorporate a considerable number of parts that were manufactured overseas, LSA can be a combination of United States- and foreign-built parts as well. That’s not unusual in the aviation world. Consider that a new Boeing airplane is likely to have many parts manufactured in other countries. When Boeing competes against Airbus, it may be important to give some work to a country that may buy billions of dollars of airliners. Therefore, even a Boeing aircraft is not 100 percent made in America.
In the LSA world, aircraft manufactured in foreign countries may be delivered to the United States without instruments or other accessory equipment, or that equipment may have been built in the United States and shipped overseas for installation in the aircraft.
Aeropro EuroFox
His Rollison Light Sport Aircraft (RLSA) company has been building a fleet of aircraft for sale from European sources. Rollison has represented numerous brands over the years he’s been involved in light-sport aviation. First he represented American brands and later European. Recently he’s traveled to South America to see what’s available. Today, Rollison sells the Remos G-3 Mirage, the Ikarus-Comco C42, and the EuroFox. He’s associated with Allistair Wilson who is making his own Astra trikes. Of the fixed-wing models in RLSA’s hangar, the EuroFox is the most modestly priced with the C42 next highest and the G-3 as RLSA’s top-of-the-line model.
More Than Familiar?
Many Ultralight Flying! readers will say the EuroFox looks to be a copy of a Kitfox. In fact, says Rob Rollison, this simply isn’t true.
The EuroFox certainly shares heritage with the Kitfox but is actually a downstream development of the Avid Flyer. In the Slovak Republic, where the four founders of Aeropro live, plans were used to build an Avid.
SportairUSA to Unveil Sirius High-Wing LSA
With events like Sebring and Sun ‘n Fun, AirVenture Oshkosh is a grand venue to introduce something new…or something coming soon. The mockup of the Cessna Sport won’t be the only new model. SportairUSA has represented the low-wing, all-carbon-fiber StingSport since LSA arrived on the scene and it has earned a spot in the top five list of best sellers. *** At Oshkosh 2007, SportairUSA will preview a “cabin model” of the TL 3000 Sirius. The company says, “Flight testing is expected to be completed in the fall, with aircraft ready for USA delivery in 2008.” They elaborate on the sleek high wing saying, “Sirius will be constructed of the same carbon fiber composite materials as the StingSport and powered by the Rotax 912 engine series with a generous, 48-inch-wide cabin and room for golf clubs in the back. Folks who saw the full size mockup at Germany’s Aero show were impressed.

Eastern European aircraft are expected to factor massively in the coming wave of light-sport aircraft (LSA) available to Americans. Several designs have already begun to attract interest as we get closer to approval of the ASTM International consensus standards that will govern the design, construction, and maintenance of these machines. One airplane that generated significant interest at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh for the last three years is the TL-2000 Sting.
Common to designs we’re seeing from Eastern Europe, the TL-2000 Sting from TL Ultralight in the Czech Republic is a sleek, composite aircraft with impressive performance and handling. The Sting series evolved from an earlier TL Ultralight design called the TL-96, and both aircraft cater to the European ultralight market, which has allowed the manufacture of LSA-category aircraft under European microlight regulations. Now, the TL-2000 and TL-96 are being reworked to meet LSA requirements. The planes have been renamed the StingSport and StarSport respectively to designate the aircraft that will be LSA-compliant.
