New LSA Milestone; CT Delivers 300th

Sales are subdued all over aviation but it isn't stopping the top performers in the Light-Sport Aircraft marketplace. As our last market share update illustrated, Remos, Tecnam, SportCruiser, and Jabiru have all done reasonably (or very) well in the last 18 months. Always among those contenders is longtime market share leader, Flight Design. *** Just a couple days ago (photo), eastern distributor Flight Design Mid-Atlantic delivered CT#300 to owner Kenneth D. Griffin of Southampton, New Jersey complete with his personalized tail number (N74KG)... interestingly, CT#200 also got a call sign identifying its owner. *** In the Something-for-Nothing Department: Flight Design will be giving away the first MC at AirVenture when EAA completes its 2009 Sweepstakes and awards some lucky person a brand-new design as well as a brand-new airplane. Big flight school and mail order house, Sporty's, is giving away a 2010 Cessna Skycatcher. Want a low wing? Enter the Get-a-Gobosh sweepstakes in Pilot magazine. Plus a rumor is circulating about another LSA giveaway from a major player. Sounds like at least four lucky people may become an owner of a $100,000+ LSA for nothing. Who couldn't like that in a down economy?

Strong Survive Tough Economy…Some Repositioning

Though a few other brands (Evektor, CZAW, CubCrafters, and Jabiru) are closing on the 100-airplanes-registered benchmark, the four brands pictured above constitute the only triple-digit sellers and have 40% of all SLSA registrations. LSA performance in 2009 got closer to general aviation deliveries as the GA piston market sunk by a very steep 55% in 1Q09.

We continue to see the effects of the last year of economic turmoil in Light-Sport Aircraft market shares. The chart accompanying this SPLOG tells the numbers as always presented, with total market share since the first deliveries in 2005 based on carefully-reviewed FAA registration data. The top twenty (of 70 total) producers still represent almost 90% of total SLSA registrations. For the record... registrations on FAA's database are not the same as sales. Aircraft can be registered and not sold. Aircraft can be identified as sold yet no longer registered, for example, if removed from service due to a non-repairable crash. To get some idea of the work my associate Jan Fridrich does to collect this information, go look for yourself at FAA's database. *** Remos continues its solid 2008 performance despite the troubled economy. In the 16-month period since January 1, 2008 the German brand is the leader with 73 units registered, followed by familiar names, in order: Flight Design 62; Tecnam 49; Czech Aircraft Works (see below) 44; Jabiru 32; American Legend 27; AMD 23; CubCrafters 22; Aeropro 14, plus Evektor and TL Ultralight at 12 each. These 11 brands registered 74% of all new SLSA airplanes. *** One of the largest business developments since Czech-based Fantasy Air went down is the change of ownership at the maker of the SportCruiser. Formerly Czech Aircraft Works (CZAW), the company is now called Czech Sport Aircraft. New operators state they will support the fleet of 89 models flying... half of them delivered in the last year. Meanwhile, Fantasy Air importer Doug Hempstead reports he expects U.S.-based production of the Allegro to start later this year.

Heart of Texas LSA Expo Judged a Success

Exhibitor Chris Regis of Paradise USA (representing the P-1) reported "good visitor traffic" and "excellent organization" from the people behind the Heart of Texas LSA Expo. The new event, held over March 8 & 9 is one of two planned shows following the strong 2009 performance at the pioneer of LSA Expos, the Sebring U.S. Sport Aviation Expo. *** Several reports reminded me of the 13-city Sport Pilot Tour held during 2005 and 2006. Each of those events drew 10-20 exhibiting LSA and attracted 300-700 people at locations across the USA. The numbers sound small to those enamored of the huge crowds at Oshkosh. But, in fact, the Sport Pilot Tour, with its focused marketing on LSA only, helped customers find the manufacturer they were seeking. Everyone who came was interested in LSA and a vendor could speak to nearly all of them. In contrast, even if you are very active, it's physically impossible to speak to even half of 1% of those attending Oshkosh. *** Though strong winds on Saturday likely kept some pilots from flying in, "more than 200 cars in the parking lot" brought reasonable crowds for a first-year show. Airplane reps were busy with demo flights on Sunday. In addition to those shown in the photos, exhibitors included: American Legend, North Wing (weight shift trikes), Paradise, Gobosh, Sportair (Sting), Jabiru, Urban Air, RANS (S-7 & S-19), and AirBorne.

2008 In Review; a Look at the Year for LSA Sales

We still cannot count weight shift or powered parachutes as those database figures remain suspect. Though sales are off about 20%, pilots still want to fly and LSA still offer excellent value. I predict pent-up demand will balloon sales once customers perceive the economy to be improving.

With one month to go (and it's hard to imagine a big December), we have figures to report for this most extraordinary year. We're all (painfully) aware of the economic predicament, but how has this impacted light-sport aviation? Here's my observations. *** In 11 months, the industry has increased fleet size by 35% to 1,510 fixed wing airplanes from 1,118 on January 1st. Annualizing the numbers, all airplane LSA should register 427 airplanes, which equates to about 35 aircraft per month, which means sales were about 20% off the monthly pace recorded since early 2006. *** Flight Design held its top spot and again delivered the most, but just barely. Remos has been the rising star of 2008 with a 147% increase over their total on January 1st. Tecnam became only the third company to pass 100 units registered. Other solid gains were logged by Czech Aircraft Works (up 69% in the year); Jabiru (up 53%); FPNA (up 55%, though from a lower number, which makes larger percentage gains easier); Aeropro (up 52%). *** In raw numbers, Flight Design lead, registering 56 in 11 months, Remos had 50, Tecnam had 36, Czech Aircraft Works had 31, Jabiru had 29, and American Legend had 24.

LAMA Pushing Hard to Provide Audit Oversight

These days, "oversight" is a heavily used word on national media. But far from the strangeness of government bailouts is the world of Light-Sport Aircraft. For the new aviation sector, industry oversight is seen as critical by LAMA and many aviation leaders. *** A conversation with LAMA founder* Larry Burke shows the LSA industry organization is moving steadily toward its oversight goals. Insurance companies and others hope LAMA will audit companies supplying 80% of purchased LSA. Once that "critical mass" is reached, insurers feel they can advise customers do as LAMA encourages..."Look for the LAMA Label." *** A LAMA audit verifies that a company which declares compliance to ASTM standards actually possesses the documentation to prove their declaration. After successfully passing a LAMA audit, a company can place LAMA Labels on their LSA so that potential customers are aware the company has satisfactorily completed a voluntary third party audit. *** LAMA is presently working with 11 companies (see photo legend) and negotiating with more. These 11 companies represent more than 50% of airplanes being delivered. Yet to illustrate the "teeth" in the audit program, 8 of 11 companies were asked to produce additional documentation (all did). *Full disclosure: I am LAMA's chairman and acting president.

Hanging with the Jet Crowd; LSA at NBAA

Earlier it appeared that the Flight Design MC would be the first Light-Sport Aircraft ever displayed at the giant National Business Aircraft Association show. NBAA is the organization representing business jets plus a large range of exhibitors serving executive transportation. The trade show happening now in Orlando is a stupendous event with many more exhibitors than Oshkosh. Numerous displays are fantastic creations that cost more for a three-day show than LSA producers spend to market themselves for an entire year. *** So it is fascinating indeed that any LSA would be present at this event. And, in fact, two are seen by the bizjet crowd: the MC and Icon's handsome amphibious LSA project, the A5. Icon mounted their own display and reported good response, especially when one of their team hits the auto wing fold button. Even jaded aviators tend to have a jaw-drop reaction to this feature. *** Flight Design's 2009 MC is part of EAA's large display at NBAA because the new LSA model is the organization's Sweepstakes airplane for 2009. Among NBAA attendees are many who serve that market but cannot afford their own sophisticated, expensive jet aircraft. Therefore many appeared to show an interest in LSA airplanes they could actually purchase.

Lots more fun than a military build-up but bearing some resemblance, companies across the USA are preparing for Sun 'n Fun starting Tuesday the 4th. I was on the grounds today and it already looks busy. I also traveled to Lockwood Aviation at the Sebring, Florida airport. A busy crew was assembling airplanes from Flight Design and Tecnam in preparation for the show in nearby Lakeland. Other companies set up at South Lakeland Airpark -- the relaxed strip a mere three air miles from Sun 'n Fun (where I do the majority of my flight evaluations). Today, I got a chance to compare a late-model 2005 CTsw with the 2006 model; look for the full report in EAA Sport Pilot for June 2006. Tomorrow, the folks at Sport Aircraft Works are hosting me to fly the Parrot, Sport Cruiser, and Mermaid from Czech Aircraft Works. You know..."Tough job but somebody has to do it."

Flight Design Unveils Second New LSA in 2008

A metal (aluminum over steel) LSA from Flight Design, the all-new MC resembles the top-of-the-line CTLS but offers even more cabin room and easy entry. Flight Schools have said they like an easily-repaired metal aircraft for flight instruction.

OSHKOSH UPDATE -- At a ceremony on EAA AirVenture's show-center location, AeroShell Square, Flight Design unveiled another new LSA, their second of 2008, the first being the CTLS which debuted at Sebring in January. Amid opening day excitement, numerous media representatives captured photos and video. A large crowd surrounded the MC when Flight Design CEO Matthias Betsch and U.S. importer Tom Peghiny took the stage. After a few words of introduction and on cue from Betsch, Flight Design representatives removed a parachute canopy used to hide the MC from view. *** The MC -- for Metal Concept -- is similar in appearance to the CTLS but is constructed mainly of aluminum skin over a welded steel structure that provides great durability and occupant protection. Flight Design expects the MC will have strong appeal to flight schools. Cockpit entry is even easier thanks to a lower threshold and a door that reaches well forward. At 51.6 inches, the cockpit is among the widest of all LSA. *** MC is available with 80- or 100-hp Rotax 912 and analog instruments or a digital flat-screen display (glass) cockpit. Base price is $98,000; nicely equipped for $113,000. Flight Design teams in Germany and Ukraine worked on the new design for three years.

LSA Dominate $300,000 NASA Challenge 2008

CAFE Foundation has for more than two decades measured efficiency of aircraft using sophisticated techniques and professional equipment. CAFE publishes the results of the Challenge; here's last year's results.

Amid furious preparations for Oshkosh, CAFE Foundation, the efficiency folks, announced teams that will vie for a second year of prizes. CAFE has a $300,000 purse thanks to their partnership with NASA, which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2008. *** It may not surprise you to hear that four of five teams entered will fly Light-Sport Aircraft, and at least one is sure to end in the money as one prize ($10,000) is for "Quietest LSA." Other prizes are a maximum of $150,000 for lowest community noise; two $50,000 prizes, one for "Green," another for safety judged by handling qualities; a $25,000 speed prize; and four $3,750 "Showcase Prizes" covering quietest cabin, best angle of climb, shortest takeoff, and best glide. Winning a couple of the larger prizes is enough money "to actually buy someone their own LSA," said CAFE President, Brien Seeley. *** The teams competing will fly a Pipistrel Virus (last year's big winner of $165,000!--photo); a modified Diamond DA20-A1; a Dynamic WT9; the UFM-13 Lambada, and a Flight Design CTsw. Despite doling out NASA's money, CAFE itself receives no funding from the space agency. A $4,000 entry fee covers some costs. The competition will occur after Oshkosh at CAFE's Flight Test Center in Santa Rosa, California from August 2-10, 2008.

Aircraft Sales through April ’08 Reflect Economy

In the first four months of the year, we've seen a few climbers: Czech Aircraft Works and Remos improved their rank the most: Highest 2008 sales were (in order): Flight Design, CZAW, Remos, Jabiru, Tecnam, and Legend.

I can identify four factors in the economy presently affecting airplane sales: Potential customers (often with plenty of assets or creditworthiness) see the value of their stock portfolio going up and down like a roller coaster; worry over their once-soaring real estate, now down markedly in some areas; witness the continuing rise of the euro-dollar exchange rate, bringing much higher prices for many LSA; and, fret over a climate of political uncertainty during another election cycle. *** Perhaps due to these factors GA single engine piston sales are off 28% compared to the same period last year, according to GAMA. LSA sales are off 30% compared to trends six months to a year ago. *** Jet and turbine aircraft sales are up, but 2008 deliveries of those aircraft stem from orders taken 2-3 years ago. Contrarily, personal and sport aircraft sales react quickly to the slightest perception of economic shakiness. *** Despite that we have some bright spots. Large ad expenditures paid off with a good advance for Remos. The Flight Design machine drives on as it always has and Czech Aircraft Works is experiencing healthy registrations. Jabiru continues to grow steadily and Urban Air's Lambada has made the top 20 for the first time. Hopefully, the last eight months of the year will offset the slow start in '08.

Big Crowds at the Sun ‘n Fun LSA Mall

If you missed the Sun 'n Fun LSA Mall in 2008, please accept an invitation for April 21-26, 2009.

Sun 'n Fun 2008 is history, but planning is already underway for the 2009 event. Event boss John Burton confirmed we will again have the LAMA-hosted LSA Mall right at the front gate next April 21-26. A major success at this year's Lakeland, Florida airshow, the industry Mall presentation featured 17 Special Light-Sport Aircraft. Weather prevented Fantasy Air's Allegro from attending. Two days before the event, a tornado crushed a Sting S3 planned for display. And work at Quicksilver Manufacturing postponed the exhibit of the GT500 (they're finishing SLSA approval, reports national sales manager, Todd Ellefson). *** The 17 who were in the '08 LSA Mall enjoyed significant traffic all week and virtually every visitor to Sun 'n Fun was at least exposed to Light-Sport Aircraft in a wide variety (although we were not able to enlist any trike or powered parachute companies). Aircraft shown were: Flight Design CTLS, AirMax SeaMax, Jabiru USA J-250, IndUS Thorpedo, CubCrafters Sport Cub, FP&A A-22 Valor, Sportsplanes.com Breezer II, Just Aircraft Highlander on floats, Lambada motorglider, Gobosh G-700S, Remos G-3, CZAW SportCruiser, Legend Cub, AMD Patriot and CH-601, Evektor SportStar, and Paradise P-1. *** Joining LAMA inside the big welcome tent were Rotax and Jabiru LSA engines, BRS emergency parachutes, AirFleet Capital (LSA financing), and ASA training resources featuring Paul Hamilton (who also made a special 30-minute DVD of LSA flying in scenic locations). LAMA plus tens of thousands of visitors thank all who participated!

High Priced Light-Sport Aircraft; What’s Going On?

Recently the euro hit 1.56 to the dollar. Watch for LSA prices to increase...again. Above the CTLS are three premium brands: (L-R) Sting S3, Remos G-3, and SkyLeader 500. Below are three bargain SLSA: X-Air LS, Sport Hornet, and EuroFox.

Lots of folks are wondering about, or complaining about, the seemingly high prices of Light-Sport Aircraft. Recently a prior editor-in-chief of EAA publications, Scott Spangler, wrote a blog on JetWhine. Scott focused on expensive avionics as one reason LSA cost so much. While a factual observation, I believe the price increase is more complex. *** First, LSA suppliers install equipment like autopilots because buyers ask for them. A large chunk of all LSA are sold to "retiring" GA pilots used to such equipment in their Cessna or Bonanza. Simpler LSA are available; most suppliers have one. But customers are buying the loaded-panel jobs. *** Let's look closer at those rising prices. Five years ago, in the pre-dawn of SP/LSA, a CT was selling for $60,000. Today it's $125,000. By far the largest piece of that doubling is the euro's soaring value compared to the dollar. Were the currencies at parity, that $125,000 would be $80,000. By the way, suppliers earn not one cent of profit from that extra $45,000! The "real" (non currency exchange) increase from $60,000 five years ago -- about $20,000 -- is generated by two factors. Most obvious are the avionics and other accessories. A $125,000 CTLS comes standard with dual glass screens, a sophisticated GPS, radio, transponder, a $5,000 emergency airframe parachute, and more. The second factor is the time value of money -- another 18% or $10,000. So an $80,000 price (if the euro equaled the dollar as it did in 2002) is not much higher than the $60,000 of 2003. *** Despite those price hikes, here in 2008 you can choose the ready-to-fly X-Air LS for $46,000, the Sport Hornet for $49,000, the EuroFox for $69,000, or the SportCruiser for $79,000. Even simpler aircraft may be coming in the $40-45,000 range. Those low numbers barely exceed the component cost of kit aircraft. *** Regardless of the preceding discussion higher prices remain a fact of life. You still have to shell out $125,000 for a CTLS (you can finance this for a bit more than $800 a month) though you get a lot of airplane for the money. If buyers truly want cheaper, simpler aircraft, they ARE available.

Their first American export was CT2K, fine tuned in 2006 for U.S. pilots as the CTSW. Now sport pilots around the world can welcome the CTLS, the third generation of this successful design. *** Longer and sleeker, LS was lengthened 14 inches and has a list of new features. AOPA’s Hartford Expo Has Generous Count of LSA

Crowds gathered around a flock of SLSA at Brainard airport in Hartford CT as AOPA kicks off their fall Expo. One fascination with LSA is folding wings as Remos demonstrated for their G-3.

Most pilots know AOPA, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, has been fighting the user fee battle...and they've been doing well resisting the might of the U.S. government. But they must also have a connection with Mother Nature as warm, beautiful weather shined on opening day at Connecticut's Brainard airport. *** On display: StingSport, Skylark, the new Breezer II, Allegro 2000, SportCruiser, Sigma, Thorpedo, Sport Cub, Bravo, Sierra, CTsw, Jabiru J-250, Gobosh G-700S, and Remos G-3. Contrary to earlier info, American Champion brought The Champ, Cessna displayed their Skycatcher mockup, and Cirrus flew their SRS. In all, I counted 17 LSA at Hartford. That amounts to a healthy 19% of all airplanes on display. Two days remain; come pick up a free "Reach for the Sky" LSA info booklet compliments of EAA and LAMA. LAMA to Announce New Consumer Program

Odds are you've heard of LAMA, the Light Aircraft Manufacturers Association, founded in the earliest days of ultralights and gaining renewed importance in this era of Light-Sport Aircraft. Most leading LSA businesses (not only manufacturers) are members; look for the LAMA logo on many websites. *** For 2007, the LAMA business organization has a new trick up its sleeve: a consumer program whereby a qualifying manufacturer can apply a LAMA decal to each LSA produced according to ASTM standards and which has successfully completed a third party compliance verification audit. Sounds pretty dry, yes. But it is critical to lend greater credibility to the ASTM consensus standards. *** A manufacturer declares his airplane compliant. LAMA sends a contractor to assure the standard was properly met. In the future LSA consumers should look for the LAMA decal to know it was built by a company whose compliance documents and processes have been verified. Light Sport Airplanes West Officially Opens

On a gorgeous April 28th, Light Sport Airplanes West brought industry leaders for the Grand Opening of their 5,600 square foot showroom/mall (lower photo). Pictured above (L-R) are Tom Peghiny and John Dunham of Flight Design USA with LSA West owner Mike Fletcher.

Within 24 hours of getting home from Sun 'n Fun, several industry leaders including Evektor America's Jeff Conrad, Flight Design USA's Tom Peghiny, Jabiru USA's Ed Ricks, and BRS parachute's Gregg Ellsworth packed up and headed off to California. What motivated these men to depart so soon after a long week in Florida? They all wanted to support proprietor Mike Fletcher as he and his staff celebrated the Grand Opening of Light Sport Airplanes West. I also flew out to join the party for America's largest LSA showroom and a grand affair it was. Estimates put attendance at 300 (I suspect that didn't include everyone present as some 100 aircraft flew in). Representing the Sportstar, CTsw, and J-250 plus the Remos G-3, TL Ultralight StingSport, and Tecnam, LSA West has an impressive line and a large inventory of LSA in stock. The Salinas, California-based operation also conducts flight training and represents some brands up and down the west coast. Various media people attended inlcuding a writer from Flying magazine) and Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue spoke at the ribbon cutting ceremony.

LAMA Audits of SLSA Continue; Board Expanded

In a year of facilitating independent audits for Special Light-Sport Aircraft, LAMA, the Light Aircraft Manufacturers Association, completed reviews of six companies: IndUS (Thorpedo); Jihlavan (Kappa KP-5); Aeropro (EuroFox); Flight Design (CT); Czech Aircraft Works (SportCruiser, Mermaid, & Parrot); and Evektor (SportStar). CZAW and Evektor were announced at a press conference at AirVenture Oshkosh 2007; all the others were announced earlier. Successfully audited LSA can display individually-numbered LAMA decals. Customers appreciate and seek independently reviewed products. *** At the same press conference LAMA announced expansion of its board to seven members. New members are Jack Pelton, president and CEO of Cessna Aircraft and Jo Konrad, president of the German Ultralight Association (DULV). These impressive additions join Dave Martin, journalist and former editor of Kitplanes; Tom Peghiny, president of Flight Design USA; Phil Lockwood, president of Lockwood Aircraft Supply; Tom Gunnarson, LAMA president; and myself, serving as Chairman. LAMA co-founder Larry Burke has the title Chairman Emeritus; he remains active in LAMA.

Near the LAMA motorhome display on the Hartford-Brainard Airport, you'll find these LSA: Sigma; Sportstar; CTsw; G-700S; Jabiru J-250; G-3; StingSport, Breezer, and Skylark; and two Tecnams. Alongside their GA models, Cirrus will show their SRS and CubCrafters their Sport Cub. Neither Cessna Skycatcher nor The Champ are expected to attend.

At Oshkosh I took the chance to speak with several general aviation leaders -- CEOs of top general aviation companies and presidents of leading membership organizations. All have been kind to me with their time and generous with their support for the Sport Pilot concept, but I sensed they didn't yet accept LSA deep down. Minor questions remained. Today that seems convincingly gone. The same not-100%-certain leaders now chorus, "LSA is here to stay." *** Evidence of that is again marshaling for AOPA's season-ending event for general aviation. The D.C.-based organization now counts more than 413,000 members, more than two-thirds of all pilots on the FAA register. The traveling Expo show typically draws well from a region's pilot population. South Central U.S. distributor Airtime Aviation delivered N200BL to Brian Longwill, their new dealer operating under the name Longwill AirCraft. And talk about beautiful timing, this also happened to be CT delivery number 50 for Airtime. Putting even a finer point on their accomplishments, Airtime got the first CT approved in the U.S., missing by mere hours being the first SLSA* in the country. *** Longwill AirCraft will base their new CT at a new airport opening in Estancia, New Mexico...east of Albuquerque and south of Moriarty. Many other airplane categories have tried round the world flights, but it's now been done by a Light-Sport Aircraft. Flying a Flight Design CT, Indian Air Force Wing Commanders Rahul Monga and Anil Kumar will claim a new record by successfully flying around the world in 79 days. Part of a celebration of the Indian Air Force 75th Anniversary, the two pilots covered a total distance of 40,497 kilometers (25,310 miles) in 79 days flying over 19 countries (Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Russia, USA, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, UK, Germany, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, and India).*** During the expedition, Commander Monga became part of very small group of pilots by soloing across the Atlantic in a single engine aircraft. Kumar had to go via airline so the CT could fly longer. Despite missing this exciting segment Kumar expressed appreciation for the CT: "It's a fantastic machine, very reliable...it got us home and there were no problems. We had good support from the manufacturer." *** The duo and their CT weren't far away from AirVenture Oshkosh 2007 but weather had delayed them and they elected to pass the big event in order to stay on the record attempt.
