If you are an ultralighter who does not who hold any FAA pilot certificate, and you were not registered with one of the three exemptionholding organizations (EAA, ASC, or USUA) before September 1, 2004, you can still obtain a sport pilot certificate. However, you will be required to:
Meet the medical eligibility using your valid U.S. driver’s license.
Meet all the aeronautical knowledge, proficiency and experience requirements:
Receive and log ground training from an authorized instructor or via a home-study course.
Receive and log the flight training hours and receive an endorsement for specific proficiency requirements for the category/class of aircraft you wish to fly as a sport pilot. (After registration with one of the exemption-holding organizations, ultralight instruction hours logged can be applied toward the sport pilot flight training requirements.)1
Document that you are a registered ultralight pilot and provide FAA with certified copy of your ultralight pilot records.
Pass the knowledge (written) and practical (flight) test.
1 In plain English, if you were not registered by September 1, 2004, you can count your ultralight flight training hours toward the training hours required for the category/class of aircraft you will fly as a sport pilot.
