Just over five years ago when ByDanJohnson.com went live, we planned a feature called PlaneFinder. It was to be an key element of this website, offering advice to help pilots select your ideal aircraft. That was version 1.0 and it proved to be more complicated than needed plus the ultralights and kit-built light planes we spent years evaluating were giving way to Light-Sport Aircraft. Reluctantly, we quietly put PlaneFinder on hold while we followed the emergence of LSA within the world of aviation. *** ByDanJohnson.com went live on April 1st, 2004… four months before the SP/LSA rule was announced. Click forward five years and we now have an astounding 97 Special Light-Sport Aircraft models from 70 manufacturers. Every one is listed on our SLSA List with links to find out much more about them. Now, we add a crowning touch: PlaneFinder 2.0. *** This automated, interactive system asks your preference to 24 very simple (this-or-that type) categories, for example, “High wing or low wing?” As you answer, the Matching SLSA list will quickly narrow your search to those with your preferred qualities.

Coming Together Globally; Kolb’s Flyer SS
A Canadian design — the Pelican 700 — was reengineered into a SLSA by an American company — New Kolb Aircraft — and is being manufactured by a Brazilian company — Flyer Industria Aeronautica. Such international collaboration is becoming common. *** Kolb won approval for the Flyer SS in July (#87 on our SLSA List). Leading the SLSA project is Izek Therrien who said, “The master lines [of the Pelican] were kept. The fuselage was then rounded, enlarged and equipped with a new flight control system.” He reported 57 have been sold in South America and that a second Flyer SS will enter the USA in October.” *** Some SPLOG readers may be unfamiliar with the Kolb name, but this 30-year old brand has produced 3,000 of their popular models including the Mark III and the Kolbra. Every one until the Flyer SS has been a kit.
A Familiar Brand Becomes Newest SLSA Approval
REPORTING FROM SUN ‘N FUN — The season-launching Sun ‘n Fun airshow starts in one day and the countdown to SLSA Number 100 rushes onward. Welcome to Kitfox Aircraft — a U.S. brand you already know (now LSA producer Number 70) — and their new Super Sport LSA, Number 97 on the SLSA List. *** Kitfox Aircraft is the current owner of a legacy brand in light aviation. A major success story with more than 4,500 aircraft accumulating more than a million flight hours, Kitfox is celebrating its 25th year in business. Kitfox boss John McBean called from Texas as he was enroute to Sun ‘n Fun to confirm the airworthiness certificate he forecast a few days earlier. *** Base priced at $83,495, this all-American brand comes with many of the same features seen on costlier LSA. Its moderate price provides basic flight instruments but interesting safety qualities such as an Angle of Attack indicator (a system which compares differential pressure of the upper and lower wing surfaces) and 25 years of history with never a structural failure.
Tecnam Unveils New P2008; a Genuine Composite
Tecnam has long been known for building handsome, well-flying, all-metal Light-Sport Aircraft. The company has certified four models of SLSA (Echo Super, Sierra, Bravo, and Eaglet) tying them for the most. That will soon change and the 61-year-old Italian company formed in 1948 — once the producer of the Partenavia twin-engine aircraft — will soon climb to the top with five approved LSA models. *** The newest, unveiled at the German Aero show, is the P2008. The sleek and beautiful aircraft was conceived after the company bought Composite Aircraft Group, the designer and builder of the Toxo. When Tecnam took possession of this Spanish company, they acquired CAG’s composite technology and the P2008 is the first full airframe to show the results of this purchase. *** P2008 has metal wings like all Tecnam LSA, but it now features a smoothly contoured fuselage.
Zenith & AMD Update CH 601 & CH 701 to 650 & 750
Consider the Zenair / Zenith / AMD family of enterprises… Following family patriarch, Canadian Chris Heintz (the designer) are Missouri-based son Sebastien Heintz (the kit supplier) and Georgia-based son Mathieu Heintz (the aircraft producer). Another sibling, Michael Heintz acts as a dealer in California. The Heintzes also have a family of aircraft models. *** Zenith Aircraft Company supplies kits for the 2-seat CH-650 and CH-750 plus the 4-seat CH-801. AMD supplies fully built versions of the 650 and 750 plus the Part 23-certified Alarus. In 2008 the family companies upgraded their top sellers: CH-601 and CH-701. Of these the CH-750 LS is the newest Special LSA on our list. *** Though it visually looks like the CH 701, the 750 LS stands two inches taller and is 11 inches longer with a 2-foot 9-inch greater wingspan, bumping wing area to 144 square feet from 122 on the CH 701.
New Australian Entry Brings SLSA Total to 85
Airgyro Aviation sounds like a rotary wing outfit. Indeed the Spanish Fork, Utah company represents and trains in the fully enclosed Sportcopter 2. In fact, Airgyro is the only place you can get “both fixed wing and auto gyro training,” said president Nate Oldham. The company recent added another “2,” the Outback 2 built by Australian Lightwing. One day after Oshkosh ’08, Nate called to report Airgyro obtained SLSA approval #85. *** Based on a two seat version of the Experimental Outback 4, the conventional looking low wing is manufactured with a steel cage structure smoothly covered with composite shells. Gull-wing doors give entry to a 46.5-inch-wide cabin. Powered by the 100-hp Rotax 912S, Outback 2 cruises at 105 knots and carries 30 gallons of fuel. Click for more features or specs. *** In addition to Sportcopter and Outback, Airgyro was appointed the exclusive sales outlet for Higher Class Aviation‘s Sport Hornet.
Yet Another…Opus Gains SLSA Status for Super 2
Sometimes a new entry slips invisibly under the radar of organizations like EAA or myself. We both (and others) have our eyes wide open for new blips popping up on the screen. Nonetheless the folks at Opus Aircraft were stealthy enough that the Super 2 approved in February 2008 only recently appeared on our SLSA List. The Atlanta MIDO (Manufacturing Inspection District Office) approved the model first created in the UK. *** Super2 is an all-aluminum, shoulder-wing aircraft with a forward sweep to broaden visibility. Originally designed and built by ARV Aviation in England, Super 2 is now made at the Rockingham County Airport in Stoneville, North Carolina. In 1983 Brit’ designer Richard Noble set the world land speed record at Black Lake, Nevada. Opus reported, “While traveling back and forth training for his record attempt, he learned how to fly. After achieving a record, Noble returned to the United Kingdom, found flying expensive and developed a small modern light aircraft.
LSA Industry’s Fast Pace…Approaching Model #100
Despite an economic slowdown shared by all of aviation, the LSA industry is rich with entrepreneurs. Innovative new designs hit the market regularly. Consider this: In just over three years, the industry has certified an astounding 81 aircraft designs and several more are on the horizon. One hundred certified LSA might be available by 2009, in less than four years since the category was created by FAA. No one remembers anything close in FAA history. *** All Light-Sport Aircraft presently total about 1% of the U.S. piston engine fleet including all FAA registrations of all aircraft types and models. Yet three LSA years compare to 80+ Cessna years, so the new segment remains in its infancy. Consequently, the LSA industry may be acting precisely as needed — focusing on innovation and diversity as proven by the number of new models meeting ASTM standards. Big sales will follow, many experts believe.
CGS Aviation’s Hawk Arrow II Wins SLSA Approval
The latest aircraft to earn Special Light-Sport Aircraft airworthiness (SLSA #77) is one of America’s most familiar and best proven models. CGS Aviation first offered its Hawk model 26 years ago, in 1982.
Since then, many model variations have been brought to market…single seat versions, two seaters, tri-gear, taildragger. Regular evolutionary changes resulted from the continuous process of development and refinement.
These efforts have sold more than 1,750 Hawks to pilots who fly them across the USA and all over the globe. *** Many years after company owner and designer Chuck Slusarczyk first offered his “real airplane” ultralight, it is appropriate that he and his Hawk Arrow II join the SLSA parade. Customers have a major reason to rejoice. Read carefully: the first 10 Hawk SLSA will be sold for $39,995 ready-to-fly with the Rotax 582.
This is, by a wide margin, the lowest price yet for any certified LSA.
Spanish Toxo Sportster Wins SLSA Airworthiness
In development for years, Composite Aeronautic Group’s Toxo won SLSA airworthiness on March 28th from Mike Millard, FAA. The newest SLSA, number 76, hails from Spain — the second LSA entry from that European country (after the Colyaer Freedom amphib). When Toxo first arrived, Americans were attracted but found it rather small inside. After displaying at American airshows, CAG reengineered Toxo and returned with a variation better suited to Americans (about 45 inches wide, making it more than five inches wider than a Cessna 172). Toxo Aircraft North America representative Amy Christian adds, “Toxo offers easy access with gull-wing doors, great air flow throughout the interior, and cushy seats with just the right angle for optimal comfort. Our pedals are even adjustable for a custom fit.” Toxo wings and fuselage are built using prepreg fiberglass plus carbon fiber with structural honeycomb cores. *** The company is represented in the USA by two companies: Toxo Aircraft North America with the lion’s share of American states, and by ILS Aircraft Company, an operation handling Alabama, Georgia, and the vital Florida market.
