After a six-year wait the New Cumulus Ultralight Motorglider took to the air thanks to Ultralight Soaring Aviation owner Dave Ekstrom. The original Cumulus required some redesign work that Ekstrom and team accomplished and tested. Now, orders are building and shipments have started. Previous kit owners are getting changed materials that should allow them to get airborne and new owners are starting work on kits. Email Dave at: ekstrom@midwest.net
Joseph Hasper says
At a published weight of 360 pounds, how can the Cumulus be considered to be an ultralight aircraft?
Dan Johnson says
Hi Joseph: Cumulus in its current form is only “ultralight-like.” It must be built as an Experimental Amateur Built aircraft. The original did qualify under Part 103 but not the present-day model (significantly as people kept wanting to add features).
Richard Blizzard says
Where can the Cumulus be bought now?
Dan Johnson says
Hello Richard: Regretfully, the only way I know to obtain a Cumulus is to buy one built as a kit and you won’t find many, if any. That’s too bad, but you do have other choices, such as Elf.
